Prof. Dr. M. Pınar Mengüç Receives “Outstanding Mechanical Engineering Award” During an Award Ceremony at Purdue University

Prof. Dr. M. Pınar Mengüç, Director of the Center for Energy, Environment and Economy and a member of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Özyeğin University, received his Outstanding Mechanical Engineer Award, which was conferred on him in 2020 by Purdue University, during an award ceremony held on September 10, 2021 in the USA. Every year, the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University recognizes alumni who have demonstrated excellence in industry, academia, governmental service, or other endeavors related to mechanical engineering with its Outstanding Mechanical Engineer Award. The Outstanding Mechanical Engineer Award is regarded as one of the most prestigious awards in the field of mechanical engineering.

During the award ceremony, Prof. Dr. Mengüç gave a presentation titled “From Heat Transfer to Societal Impact”. In his presentation, Prof. Dr. Mengüç presented an overview of how heat transfer, particularly radiative heat transfer research evolved eventually to impact interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and the society at large. Prof. Dr. Mengüç also discussed briefly radiation transfer and particle characterization studies he had in the US, and then gave information about the nano-scale near field radiation transfer studies that started in the US and continued in Turkey. Finally, he outlined the research related to energy efficiency in buildings and cities, which was built on integrated engineering and architecture studies conducted in Istanbul, Turkey.

Prof. Dr. M. Pınar Mengüç obtained his B.Sc. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Middle East Technical University (METU), in Ankara, Turkey. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University, Indiana, USA in 1985. He joined Özyeğin University, Istanbul in 2008 to establish the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Since 2009, he has been serving as the Director of the Centre for Energy, Environment, and Economy (CEEE/EÇEM).
