Abstract

Material flows and logistics have major roles at construction sites. The efficiency of construction activities depend on proper management, handling, and distribution of materials. In this sense, coordination of materials with activities and other resources is essential. However, most construction projects have a simplistic analysis of on-site material flows. A realistic analysis for material flows and logistics should consider spatial configurations in 3D, equipment handling, construction schedule and methods, delivery schedules, as well as other dynamic aspects at site. This thesis study develops several techniques to support simulation of material flows and logistics at site within a Building Information Models (BIM) and resource-integrated simulation framework. To achieve this, information requirements for simulating site-material related processes on BIM is determined, including process models and material conversions. Afterward, a database has been developed to facilitate related information management between BIM and simulation. Finally, these requirements and database are integrated within the simulation platform and a test case is provided. Results show that the developed techniques for material flows can realistically support complex material processes integrated with the construction schedule, crews and equipment, site status and other construction constraints.

Bio

Cem Demirci was born in İstanbul, Şişli on 18 July 1993. He completed his high school education in Şişli Terakki High School in 2012. He received his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering Department of Özyeğin University, İstanbul, Turkey in 2017. After graduation, he started his master’s degree in Graduate School of Özyeğin University in September 2017. He conducted his M.Sc. study under supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Ragıp Akbaş. His main research is on analyzing construction site material flows and logistics using BIM and resource-integrated simulation software. During his studies, he also worked as a teaching and research assistant.
